Chattanooga Tennessee and Lookout Mountain, and the surrounding areas served as a crucial railroad junction for both the North and South throughout the Civil War. Over the entire course of the Civil War seven battles were fought for control of the Chattanooga Tennessee area, which eventually served as a launching point for General William Tecumseh Sherman's devastating march towards Atlanta and "to the sea."

Many Civil War battle sites have been designated part of the National Park Service, including the Chattanooga National Military Park, Chickamauga Battlefield, Point Park and Cravens House on Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge. Civil War Monuments to fallen Civil War soldiers can be found all over the Chattanooga area, and many of these men are buried in the National Military Cemetery at the foot of Missionary Ridge.
