In 1863, Union and Confederate forces fought for control of Chattanooga, the gateway to the deep south. The Confederate's were victorious at nearby Chickamauga in September, but renewed fighting in Chattanooga Tennessee in November gave Union troops final control. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the nation's first, was created in 1890 to preserve and commemorate these battlefields.

Ross's Landing
Chattanooga, TN 37402
The Passage, a new pedestrian link designed by Team Gadugi, 5 Native American Artists from Oklahoma, is more than a memorial marking the Trail of Tears. "It is a physical celebration of our Cherokee Culture. It is important to us to reconnect with this community and come full circle in this journey". Located at Ross's Landing adjacent to the Aquarium, the Passage pays tribute to the 4000 Cherokees who died in stockades or on the Trail of Tears in 1838.
